Sure cigarettes made people a lot of money and provided jobs, but the overall effect was negative to our economy and society.

One could justifiably argue that smokers have eased the burden on Social Security by conveniently croaking at an early age. Anyway, smoking is a lifestyle choice and if one is dumb enough to indulge, then one can bear the consequences..

The impacts of oil and coal are the same.

That's complete and total horse pucky. Without hydrocarbon energy, the lifeblood of our civilization, our western standard of living could never have been built. And to think it can be sustained while magically removing it, is beyond silly.

I would dearly love to see you, and all the other carbon based energy haters, have to survive in an environment where these sources didn't exist. Take away all the things that depend on them for their existence and you'd be huddled, shivering and hungry, in some cave.

To expect that "alternative" energy sources will replace current conventional (realistic) sources, the ones that power our way of life, to any meaningful extent, for decades to come, is a childishly naive pipedream of major proportions..
