The Dems learned from Ronnie Babe Reagan. In 1966, he wanted to start charging tuition at state colleges. Of course, as a student at that time, I didn't like the idea. I heard him speak in Pleasanton and he told the right wing crowd there that he was going to force students to pay tuition so they could get a job and stop protesting the wonderful war in Vietnam. The next day, on The Cal State, Hayward campus (now Cal State East Bay), he said he would never charge tuition to college students. I asked him if he was lying today or yesterday, at which point I discovered why Bonzo couldn't stand the guy. <G>

Anyhow, it turned out he was telling the truth. As governor, he didn't charge tuition. He charged "fees." Even junior college students, where tuition was mandated to be free, got nailed with fairly large "fees."

I wasn't old enough to vote at that time, but I would have voted against him if I had been. And it would have made no difference. He was a movie star. <G>

It sounds like these guys are the same sort of semantic (not semitic. I am anti semantic. <G>) crooks, parsing words to meet the letter but not the spirit of the law.
