That episode actually lasted from 1966 to 1982, and it was a lot more than cut in half in real terms. Dow rallied to, and bounced off, 1000 5 times in those 16 years.

If we're lucky, our next 15 years will have S&P 1500 as the unbreakable barrier. If unlucky, S&P 1000.
