Isolationism is the correct term to describe what you expect from "oil independence". we could give the Middle East, Russia, Venezuela, and every OPEC cartel member the finger. We could pull out of the Middle East and just fund Israel to fight their wars over there. We could save ourselves the cost of future wars like Iraq and not be so meddlesome in the Middle East that we attract the attention of folks like Al Qaeda. Then the next time Iran or any other cartel member gets pissed and wants to create a supply shock to the oil markets, we could say "go ahead, make my day."
