Atom sales help Intel expand beyond PC market SAN FRANCISCO: Sales of Intel's Atom processor, designed for consumer electronics gadgets and super-slim personal computers, are topping company targets as the largest chipmaker in the world seeks to expand beyond a slowing PC market.
"Atom is off to a very, very rapid start, far exceeding our expectations when we started the year," the company's chief financial officer, Stacy Smith, said in an interview on Tuesday. "It's the perfect recession product to have in the marketplace."
I believe Atom was designed for the MID market first. We bought the Dell Atom based netbook for our son, who would go down with the ship rather than use microsoft as opposed to our other son who loves VISTA... :-) If you use a 16 year old and 20 year old as a gauge for the future, I would hazard a guess that windows would decline, but then again, one of our sons is more 'into' PCs as gadgets the other is a just a 'user' :) |
