I think directing those natural energies toward a structured and controlled game with rules is an excellent opportunity to teach them about the life they'll face in the future. Parents who try to soften and protect are doing their kids a disservice,

Unfortunately, there are a lot of parents like that out there.

I've encountered the same thing with dog owners. We have a new dog park in town. I was there several weeks ago with my dog. There was a woman there to did not like the way the dogs were playing with her dog. She kept swatting at the other dogs saying, "no, get away." All that was going on was the dogs were playing aggressively and figuring out where each belonged in the pack.

I went up to the woman and said, "they're just being dogs. They're playing. If you don't like the way the dogs are playing, take your dog and leave." She eventually left.
