>Maybe you can work it by pointing out how poorly all those OTHER organizations managed the money given them by investing it in Madoff?

Not really. The truth is that I got lucky. My organization's too young to have an endowment to manage (grants go in, grants go out in the same year), and none of my funders happened to be exposed to Madoff.

However, there are some ways I can and plan to take advantage of the situation. Because I've spent really conservatively over the last two years and raised more than enough money to get by, I have a bit of a cushion that I'm going to invest in not one, but two fundraising staff over the next couple of months while other organizations are cutting back. There's still money out there, you just have to work twice as hard for the same amount.

Also, with the downturn, many people are no longer going to be able to pay expensive synagogue dues and Jewish school tuitions... but my site is free for anyone to use. It's also really, really cheap per user -- about forty cents per month per user, and even only like three bucks a month per user that visits often.

And, I'm going to try to get funders to invest in initiatives that will make my site a little more philanthropy-independent. I almost got a grant for that last year, but the foundation said that the urgency wasn't apparent enough. Now it is!

Gotta keep thinkin'...
