Neither are we, unfortunately.
I wish I'd had the foresight to understand that our pets (we have four) would be reaching the natural ends of their lifespans at roughly the same time. We're regular customers at our local vet, and each visit, complete with medications, costs over $100. I often think about how the elderly, those on fixed incomes, and the newly jobless are doing in this regard. Still, abandoning a pet is a very difficult thing.

I've read that drop-offs at animal shelters are way up as well.
