Nutrition Databases

www.usda.gov
The website for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Though a bit tricky to navigate, the USDA website has a huge catalog of resources including extensive tables of food composition. They have an extensive flavonoid content database, for instance.

Another website managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and full of government-generated data on food composition and safety.

dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov
The National Institutes of Health maintains a site containing detailed descriptions of numerous nutritional supplements. The content is very conservative but presents unbiased discussions of the value and safety of various supplements.

General

www.pdrhealth.com
Contains tremendously detailed descriptions of the scientific knowledge behind many nutritional supplements. The discussions are surprisingly thorough—be prepared for some heavy reading.

www.lef.org
This is the website for the Life Extension Foundation, a Florida organization that is politically active but also operates a large retail operation. Their website (and magazine, Life Extension) contain a huge amount of information on health and nutrition.

Information about the health benefits of magnesium, especially as it relates to water content.

www.consumerlab.com
This is a subscription site but nonetheless has lots of free content. This organization tests and reviews various nutritional supplements for effectiveness and safety. They occasionally will make surprising findings in their self-generated testing experiences.

Lots of practical information on why and how to use soy products.

www.solaeliving.com
A commercial site maintained by the Solae company but contains lots of practical advice on how to use soy products, recipes, etc.

A website full of interesting conversation and scientific data behind vitamin D, a terribly underappreciated nutrient with implications for heart health, bone health, cancer prevention.

A commercial site maintained by the California Almond Council but contains loads of summaries on the surprisingly broad scientific and clinical data on almonds and their health benefits.

An upbeat site devoted to encouraging and supporting your walking program. Contains advice on how to use your pedometer effectively.

A site devoted to all sorts of exercise. You might find the walking section most helpful. It also lists various organizations and events that you can participate in.

A commercial subscription site that tackles the seemingly difficult job of providing personal training on-line.

www.fitren.com
A commercial site that has the appearance of just being a site for bodybuilders, but author/operator Tom Venuto is among the most knowledgeable and effective coaches for weight loss and fitness.
