So the Civil war is apples and oranges? Gee, I thought Lincoln made a pretty clear couple of statements there...

The north wanted what the south had. The south didn't want to roll over. The south executed their Constitutional right...to secede. That's pretty much it. Slavery was a side issue. Statists will always try downplay the Constitution because that paper is a major roadblock in their totalitarian viewpoint. The US seems to have a terminal case of "we know what's best for you."
