If you ever take time to read the Declaration of Causes of Seceding States you'll see they're largely about slavery. The election of Lincoln meant the beginning of the end for slavery. The South knew it, and said so.

Here's the first line from Georgia's declaration:

sunsite.utk.edu

The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery.

By seceding, the south would've effectively kidnapped millions of American citizens and forever prevented them, as written into the confederate constitution, from being free.

Do you really think a state should be able to leave the union taking American citizens with them as slaves? You think it's statism to prevent that?
