Still holding a 30 year grudge? Honestly US cars got a lot better, largely in response the Japanese competition. Now I think it's pretty damn close with the Japanese having a quality edge at the margin.

I've had US cars most of my life, not because of choice but because the companies I worked for only offered a choice of US cars as company cars. I really never had a 'bad' one, but we only kept them 2 years.

American cars have improved but they are still not great. I had used cars before I bought my first good car in the early 90s........the Buick Reatta. It was 'hand made' and supposed to be the best of the best. It turned out to be just okay. Then I bought the BMW three series......the difference was nite and day. I had three times as many problems with the Reatta as the BMW. From what I have read, I am sure the American big three have improved their quality over the years but they are still not there yet. It still seems to be a hit or miss proposition.
