It isn't a dumb question. It is highly pertinent and I'd like an answer. If the American automakers are idiots, please explain why the Japanese automakers are facing the same kinds of problems?

It is a dumb question...all sales are down...cars front and center. During the last 3 decades, US makers have lost lots of market share. I suspect that they have long ago crossed financial critical mass which makes them very vulnerable to downturns like the one we are suffering now...parting gift from the shrub. On top of it, we have suffered a significant increase in energy costs, which further exacerbates Detroit's vulnerability, since their factories are heavily slanted towards production of large and energy inefficient vehicles.
