Why?

Because when you're paying someone millions of dollars a year, which you have to pay a CEO of a multinational corporation, his time is valuable and you don't waste it with him sitting in airports.

Multiple reasons but start with the fact that a CEO to run a company like one of the Big 3 will cost at a minimum $7,500/hour (usually far more).

If it takes two hours on each end to get through the airport, that costs you $30,000. If flying from Detroit to Houston requires a stop in Dallas, that's going to cost you thousands more. And sometimes he needs to get somewhere today and get back for work in Detroit later the same day.

Often, they have to travel to locations that don't have airports capable of landing commercial jets. In fact, many times companies have to "enhance" the facilities (at their own expense) at an airport just to land corporate jets. I can think of several locations where this was done. Not because the companies like to waste money but because they need executives to be able to travel to/from the location at will.

One other point is that usually these guys are traveling with multiple people. In these instances the problem is multiplied.

NO competent business with expensive management personnel would use commercial airlines for this kind of travel unless there were non-financial motivations.

It is just good business sense for any sizable corporation to have some number of planes to get executives where they need to be.
