I know of a couple of cases of what could be considered insider trading
- the employees of this company loaded up on the company's stock just before a major contract was announced. The stock went up over 60% over the next 10 days.
- In the other case, the company announced an alliance with a leader in their field, the stock went up 50% the same day.

People in technology/software companies, quite often, have access to such information before it becomes public information and some of them do act upon it.

Alan.
