Where have you been the past few decades? This has already been happening. We have had rivers catch on fire. The Neches river by Beaumont used to be totally devoid of fish due to polution. Deforestation has caused the Sahara desert to expand, and might have even created it in the first place. While the exact mechanism isn't known, it is a fact that whenever humans made their way to a new continent, all the megafauna died out in a very short period of time. Humans have been making bad things happen to the environment for millennia.

You're conflating several concepts. First, just because the fish die out in a river for a spell doesn't mean that (a) humans caused it or (b) it is a big deal. Certainly, the Northeast liberals have DESTROYED many of their waterways with pollution. But if you clean up the pollution sources, the ecosystems return to their previous states for the most part.

When you dump an Exxon Valdez out on a coastline, obviously it is going to cause some trouble for a while. But eventually, everything will return to normal. In the unlikely event some species is dead forever, as long as it isn't human, no big deal. Species come and go. It isn't the end of the world when one croaks.
