So then why do we subsidize the oil industry and why do we run such large deficits?

Did you note the key operative phrase, "that put us in a subordinate economic position to the rest of the world".

Many of our competitors subsidize their energy markets (as well as many others) and that places us in a distinct disadvantage.

The point is, however, if other countries intend to focus on going "fossil free", then we'll be on a more even playing field. But I ain't seeing that happen yet.
