cortical spreading depression One of the standard theories of migraine with aura has as an early event a slowly spreading depolarization of the cortex, closely mimicking a similar phenomenon that can be induced in animal models. Kind of like dropping a stone in a pond and having the ripple spread out across the whole pond. This site (although not updated since 2004) has some good abstracts: neurotransmitter.net I don't think anyone really knows yet if CSD is a critical step in migraine or whether it is yet another epiphenomenon in some types of migraine. For a while it was the "hot" theory, but now seems to be fading as a center of attention in the field. Peter
