Paul, I am for it if we can do it without a political food fight. I think broadband to everywhere for free will be the end of the phone companies large profits and hefty dividends. They will eventually be reduced to competing to sell you a commodity called "bandwidth." Phones, PCs etc. should have choices on how to connect to others as cheaply as possible. They might first look for a free IP connection then one you subscribe to and finally cell connection perhaps one you pay by the minute since you don't need a lot of minutes with most everyone on broadband IP phones. I think someone big like Google will promote it to get their ads to more people but I tried to get HP interested in this idea almost 10 years ago after I left and Carly took over.... I think it is good news for anyone that provides open access or builds out infrastructure... FNSR for fiberoptics, perhaps Cisco for routers, Google for advertising on the platform for those who give it away for free to make money from Google AdSense ads, etc... I believe Mozilla/Firefox is funded from Google ads from the search box in the toolbar.... There is no reason a free cell phone with GPS and mapping software can't offer you coupons for alternative choices when you enter the address of the restaurant you want to dine at.... The alternative restaurant might offer you 20% off if you bring in your cell phone with the coupon and scan it... then they give 10% of the bill to Google to split with the phone company for the new customer when the coupon is scanned. Amazon.com may also benefit... go to a store, take a picture of the 52" HDTV you want to buy and Amazon software figures out what they can sell it to you for. You might book the sale from Amazon right in the store... I've got ways to do this stealthily as Frys won't let me take pictures of stuff on sale when I tried.... (Bluetooth barcode scanner...)
