The top question I have is what was Hamas expecting? It seems this was deliberately provoked - why? Add to that - why did they not have the patience to wait for Obama? As long as Bush is around Israel will have full US support. So - what was Hamas's objective?

They expected and wanted their own Lebanese war. Hezbullah did very well out of theirs, so why shouldn't Hamas get one of their own? With any luck, the Israelis would kill a thousand civilians (Hamas certainly placed their rockets with an eye to achieving such casualties) and international outrage would be suitably provoked. In the best case, they could get more human shields from the UN and an end to the blockade plus lots more toys from Iran.

However, it seems like Israel has learned a few lessons from Lebanon and declined to oblige, while Hamas has burnt their bridges with their former patrons, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, who won't do much to help them. We'll see.
