I would argue that the immediately post WW II period also likely represented an 'abnormally high' era of American relative strength on the global stage --- given that the economies of Germany, Japan, France and England and the rest of Europe lay in ruins... with Asia in no better shape.

As to 'the EU is larger now than it was then': Well yes!

Of course! (And that accounts for much of it's increased economic heft on the world stage - it now contains a larger population than the U.S.)
