Of course! (And that accounts for much of it's increased economic heft on the world stage - it now contains a larger population than the U.S.)

But that isn't a relative decline for the US.

Take all the members of the EU now, or all the members back then, and compare the change in recent decades compared to the US (recent decades meaning starting from the 70s or 80s, and not including their post WWII recovery) and US wealth, power, and population has grown faster than the EUs.
