But...someone always owned the land before someone else did. Should we be tossed out of what is today the USA by its ancestral owners, the "indians"? When are historical demarcations no longer practical or applicable to a modern problem?

That's the point.......the Jews had been mostly gone from Palestine for over a thousand years. Suddenly, in a meeting in Europe in 1897, Palestine was to be their home again. No one consulted the current residents. The decision was made unilaterally. I don't know of any people who would happy having a group of people moving in and taking over.
