They are not efficient enough and theoretically will never be.

I tend to disagree.. But I think what must occur first is the development of a gas fuel supply infrastructure, via Natural Gas, THEN the fulfillment of R&D aimed at producing non-Platinum based anodes for Fuel Cells that makes them more practical for mass production. And Fuel Cells are more efficient than fossil fueled vehicles by a good measure.

But hey.. tell us your alternative.
