I have a bittersweet connection with the National Archives. My sister had a contract to redo their software. I sent her a book called "The Clock of the Long Now" which illuminated the importance of very long term record keeping. She developed a very close relationship with the authors of that book and had them involved in the National Archives project. They were all very excited about the project, because it is the epitome of linking diverse information sources and types together, from the very primitive to the exceedingly complex. Long Now philosophy is key to its success.

Sadly, as has happened over and over again in her experience and my own with government contracts, a new set of administrators moved in, threw out the good work she had done and started over to recreate essentially the same entity. This happens because the new people want the credit and do not want to share it with any predecessor, no matter how superior it might be.
