But, like the choice of Palin, it only plays to those who are already solidly in their camp. And does not win them any points with those who aren't. In other words, unless your base is a majority, it is about as stupid of a political move as can be made. It is polarizing in a time when polarizing doesn't play well any more.

I think back at the Bush and republican victories in 2000 and 2004 and they were making similar statements about the dems. Power has been cyclical in the US...I can't help but think that the odds are in favor of the reps regaining their senses about fundamentals like the ones you mention in your post. I say this because it underscores the importance of the need for the Dems to govern with it in mind and not lose their way as the reps have in the last 8 years.
