Almost. The difference was the Democrats didn't start looking for reasons to throw people out of the party and tried to appeal only to the minority members of the party. There were those in the party who did call for that, but the leadership didn't respond.

Yes, power is cyclical, but when the response to a downturn is to "cleanse" the party, that is a call for marginalization.
