It's hard to guess what will be used for barter if our dollar becomes worthless...............food might be very valuable!

I live in a rural area where people have land, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, livestock and their own wells. People who have a sense of what's coming in terms of possible disruptions in food (and other goods) delivery are making plans with each other.

I think JQP's learning welding is a good idea. Skills in carpentry, electrical, blacksmithing, sewing and cooking etc. are all eminently barterable, should there be this kind of crisis.

There was a piece this morning on the Today Show about the surge in the purchase of home safes. We've got one...have important papers, and a few thousand dollars stored. I just put all my good jewelry in the safe deposit box at the bank, though. Crimes like home break-ins are on the rise in my area.
