It's only rare today because we haven't spent as much time looking for it and developing supplies of it around the world. In addition, I predict that in our lifetime, new batteries will be created that don't even use lithium. You seem to be stuck on this rare commodity kick and continue to ignore the bigger picture. An electric vehicle is not synonymous with lithium battery storage. An electric vehicle simply needs some electricity storage mechanism. Anything that works will do. Right now, lithium seems to be the one gaining massive traction. Billions have already been spent in building manufacturing capacity in Asia and EnerDel continues to expand their capacity in the US. And they aren't doing it out of altruism. They are doing it because they see a coming tsunami of demand.

Now, you can sit here and bitch and moan about it and claim that I want a command economy. However, the reality is that it's already happening and I just want our government to help our companies who are trying to get a leg up on our competitors, but getting engaged to provide the necessary incubatory support, as all responsible governments do when they are trying to create a new industry that can create massive wealth for it's citizens.

You can feel free to watch you retirement dwindle, but I want to leave behind a wealthier country and I want to secure my retirement as well. We need to look to the future, not the past.
