How about sending every person over 18 in the United States a check for 411,000.00? That's the conforming mortgage amount. Your average couple would be able to easily pay off their mortgage. All other adults would be able to buy a modest home for cash. Or, if paired up together, quite a substantial home. Of course, I don't advocate this. The number of intended consequences would be myriad. Here's one: it would not change one bit the plans of those who are deeply underwater on their real estate who intend to walk. You walk from the home, and you've got a check for 411k to get you down the road a, to the next place in life. G
