I loved seeing Utah beat up on Alabama last night. Alabama had been #1 for 5 weeks during the regular season and Utah always had trouble making the top ten. "They didn't play anybody." Just 5 bowl teams. Oregon State, TCU and Colorado State WON their bowls after losing to Utah. "The had a weak non conference schedule." I don't think Utah knew Michigan would be weak this year.
It isn't just that the SEC is over hyped, every year, but that other conferences are under hyped.
So, Florida, with one loss, gets into the national championship game by beating Alabama, while Utah, with no losses, beats Alabama and will probably be ranked 3d or 4th. BTW, though I took some grad courses at a U. of Utah extension in Germany, I am not a Utah fan. I just think they got screwed.
USC had similar problems, though they certainly cannot be called under hyped. Losing one game in the top bowl conference, The Pac 10, disqualified them from the national title game. Beating bowl winners, Oregon, Arizona and Cal got them no respect.
I also like Ole Miss beating Texas Tech, though I don't know why. Over hyped vs. "who dat?" again, I suppose.
Don't get me started on Texas vs. Oklahoma. <G>
Do I want a national tourney? Hell, no, this is a lot more fun with several programs having legitimate grievances to bitch about until next season.
Still, way too many bowls. 68 teams made bowls, while only 51 were ineligible. It is like when the NCAA ruined the basketball tourney by expanding to 64 teams. 32 is more than enough and the NIT could be a great consolation prize. |
