Count prisoners and you can know. Check cleanliness of men's versus women's premises and you can know. See who gets into physical conflict and you can know.

One doesn't need to "project" to know what something is thinking. One can study behaviour to see what was being thought. Normally can watch behaviour BEFORE action to see what is being thought - eye movements and other body language.
