For whom the Bell tolls: IPs
High-speed service available only from Internet providers
Joanne Chianello The Ottawa Citizen
Residents of Ottawa-Hull and Quebec City will be the first Bell Canada customers to receive a new technology that turns regular copper telephone wire into a high-speed transmission system.
The new technology, called ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), uses sophisticated electronics to overcome the previous problems of sending data over copper wires, giving residential customers access to online services, including the Internet, at higher speeds. ADSL will allow large computer files, including video clips, to be downloaded over regular phone lines.
Once the ADSL technology is installed into the telephone network, Bell said, that information can be downloaded 75 times faster than with an ordinary modem. And ADSL will allow users to surf the Internet and talk on the phone at the same time.
The new technology has already been tested in Kanata and St. Bruno, Que. But there's a catch.
Home-based consumers can't just phone Bell and order the new service. Instead, Bell is selling the technology to Internet access providers, who in turn will offer the service to their own customers. Bell has yet to announce the name of any specific Ottawa-based Internet company that will be offering ADSL. |
