Hard, but not impossible.

If the primary trading account was controlled by one person, Bernie, and he claimed trade secrets would be revealed by disclosing individual trades, he could keep it a secret. Just say the balance is this and let the bookkeepers allocate it to the thousands of accounts in proportion to their initial investments.

Deposits and withdrawals... Bernie could get a month-end summary and adjust his mental book. Withdrawels weren't an issue as long as more came in than went out....

He probably did the whole thing in his head...

The bookkeepers won't question the balances... not their job.

I find it VERY hard to believe that his sons and his wife (and other relatives) were not aware of some of the unusual activities that took place inside the firm.
