I've been studying various charts from the period 1970-1975 quite closely. Inflation really took off in 1972 and the CRB index doubled in not much more than a year. Gold went from 50 to 200 soon after. I am inclined to think that we might be at a comparable moment. It's true we have not just come off the gold standard, but we have come off a period when gold was unnaturally suppressed in price, mostly by ill-advised forward selling by producers but also by sentral bank sales.

I hope you are right about oil. I was able to get an instaneous transfer of a large block of COS.UN from my IRA into a trust account on Friday. The income is currently taxed at 15% whereas any withdrawal from an IRA is like ordinary income. This means a whopper of a tax bill for 2009, but COS is way down, so it was a good moment to move it out of the IRA and pay the taxes before it goes back up. I have no interest in getting out of the oil sands.
