You hit on something here but of course it gives you no insight into the nature of the problem. Its hard to live next to someone who wants you dead. Bin Laden wants us dead and showed it. Pals/Hamas want israelis dead and fight in ways that are very personal--suicide bombers, rockets at cities which clearly show their intention..
Its interesting that you once joked when i revealed my near death experience during 9/11. You also scoff at israelis in the towns that are hit by rockets. Your heroes at al quaeda can do no wrong because they are fighting the hated bush and same for hamas in attacking the hated international jewish conspiracy you publicly "expose" on this thread.
But back to your point. Yes there is great danger in becoming a garrison state--US post 9/11 and Israel. You lose a little bit of your soul in trying to fight a heartless enemy. WW2 type wars dont fly anymore. Pacifism is further along than ever before in the west and this is good because war sucks but bad because sometimes war is necessary. Job for US and Israel is to determine when to fight and how far to take it.
Starting today, i will say israel should announce a unilateral cease fire in civilian areas starting in 24 hours.. They gained all they can gain and done as much damage to their reputation as they should allow.. They should concentrate on destroying the tunnels until cease fire begins and in trying to get UN/EU/Arab states into gaza. Only way i withdraw this new position is if they are on the verge of killing off hamas rule in gaza so i will give them a little leeway.
