Deal Means Ameritech New Media Has 1 Million Homes Under Franchise

DETROIT, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Westland this week became the 30th
Detroit-area municipality to award Ameritech New Media a cable television
franchise, pushing the number of households in cities with Ameritech
(NYSE: AIT) cable TV franchises over the 1 million mark.
The Westland City Council voted unanimously to give its residents a choice
of cable television providers for the first time, by approving a 15-year
franchise agreement with the subsidiary of Ameritech.
Ameritech now has completed cable TV franchises with 55 Midwestern cities
and towns containing more than 1 million households and a total population of
more than 2 million. Ameritech now offers its enhanced cable TV service,
called americast(TM), in 35 communities across the upper Midwest, including 17
in Michigan.
Westland has a population of approximately 86,000 residing in about 35,000
households. Ameritech will compete with incumbent cable provider MediaOne in
the community.
"We welcome the agreement with Ameritech, which will provide our residents
with a true 'choice' in cable service," said Mayor Robert J. Thomas. "I
believe that Ameritech will bring a new level of service to our residents, as
well as providing the competition that we have needed for so long."
Customers who choose Ameritech's americast cable service will receive more
than 80 channels of video programming at competitive prices. At no extra
charge, Ameritech's expanded basic package will include The Disney Channel and
the Golf Channel -- channels that many cable operators offer only at a
premium, if at all.
Over the next few years, Ameritech plans to expand americast to include
hundreds of channels and add interactive services to make consumers' lives
easier. The americast programming is being developed by Ameritech's joint
venture with The Walt Disney Company and several other communications
companies.
Ameritech serves millions of customers in 50 states and 40 countries.
Ameritech provides a full range of communications services, including local
and long distance telephone, cellular, paging, security monitoring, cable TV,
electronic commerce, on-line services and more. One of the world's 100
largest companies, Ameritech (www.ameritech.com) has 69,000 employees, 1
million shareowners and $24 billion in assets.
