And my most immediate focus is energy independence in order to preserve our national security options.

Then our goals are identical. However, how can you possibly not acknowledge the fact that our oil consumption is the biggest contributor to our national security problems? It is the root cause of most of our national security problems. Until you understand that, you won't be able to think properly about solutions.
