Savings rate going up is great for America. I have seen estimates that it will get up to 10% by the end of this year. Sure it will bankrupt a lot of shopping centers and retail businesses, but those need to go bankrupt and stay bankrupt. The USA as the consumer of last resort is hopefully history, and our policy makers will hopefully wake up and realize that this is in the long term interest of the country. It we are serious about energy independence, we will need a lot of savings to make it real in the next decade or two.

If the high savings in the US persists, I have no idea how the rest of the world and in particular China and the emerging markets escape depression.
