The difference is that Mindmelt says we should deny the oil industry any subsidies at all, which would include denying them access to places like ANWR and off-shore areas currently prohibited.

Hum, I've never seen him say that. But there are probably places that are worth more protected than the marginal production of oil.

,i>Face it, aside from those like you who don't drive long distances in your Tesla, few people will wish to trust a all-electric plug-in for their daily commute.

I don't 'face that' at all. I for one would love an electric 'city car'. 90 mile range would be perfect, 70 mile range would be acceptable. You could probably do that with non-Lithium batteries and some creativity.

But EVEN RIGHT NOW the cost of Lithium Battery packs is about $10K even WITHOUT the pending global demand that would come from a worldwide gov't subsidized "command" transition. This would likely make Lithium prices skyrocket even further and undermine the economic attractiveness, regardless of whatever domestic production we might bring back online.

$10k sounds like a lot, but amortized over the life of the batteries it's not that expensive (especially with "fuel" cost savings). Isn't there supposed to be a huge lithium find in SA, I think Chile? And aren't lithium batteries able to be recycled? It's got to be easier to mine lithium than to deep sea drill for oil.
