The police should investigate whether it was ignorance and stupidity, or malign intention. There is a difference. Either remains possible as far as I can see.

OJ Simpson cut his ex wife's throat. That's malign intention. Stupid too, but definitely malign. The knife didn't slip in error while he innocently whittled wood.
