I must say, I always thought DEC hardware and software was far better than IBM's. Always. To put it in perspective, VAX/VMS and RSTS/E, EVEN TODAY, are better operating systems than the AS/400s (of course, the 400 has had a lot of modern-day functionality added that makes it nice).

But I wouldn't argue with CJ's claim that IBM out-marketed DEC, that's for sure. But DEC had other issues.

Bottom line, IBM had a lot to spend on marketing so yeah, they could buy a lot with it. But they lacked vision. As did DEC.

GM is a better marketing organization than IBM, IMO.
