Pete <OFF TOPIC more cable modem vs. adsl discussion>

That just depends on how many users they max-out on a node. <500 is great. 1000 is too busy and everything slows down ("typical LAN-type multi-user saturation problems, driving down effect bandwidth big time" i like the way you said that.) Even with a highly unlikely 1000 users it beats the pants off of 28.8-56k Cox has mucho fiber installed here already including all of the backbone. HFC is plenty robust to handle the last part to the house. Don't know who they'll use for ISP.

Once the bigger pipes to the end user are available, backbone internet speed is going to be a problem. My current ISP already caches a lot of sites locally. Cable ISP providers like @Home have to get into this in a big way.

Oh, there are some possible security problems with cable because everybody on a node is on the same pipe. Unlike the telco solutions.
