Vale workers to return to jobs at Brazil mine

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Brazilian miner Vale (VALE5.SA) (RIO.N) said Thursday it would bring 450 staff now on paid leave back to work at one of its domestic iron ore mines for an unspecified period to comply with local labor laws.

Vale, the world's biggest producer of iron ore, said in December it was laying off 1,300 workers at its projects around the world and putting 5,500 more on paid leave as the global economic gloom showed no sign of brightening.

The workers will return to their duties at the Fabrica Nova mine, a Vale spokesperson said. The state is one of the country's richest areas for mineral resources.

Brazil is notoriously bureaucratic and has strongly-enforced labour laws that tend to work in favor of employees, making it a complex and often lengthy process for firms to reduce staff. (Reporting by Denise Luna; Writing by Peter Murphy; Editing by John Picinich)
