>>> Before them we had CP/M and other hobby OSes and no business model to make money selling software. The VIC20, AppleII and Kaypro owners simply stole software - IBM PC owners bought their software.

I was making a decent living writing software for micros before the PC made its debut. It wasn't being stolen, it was 100% custom.

The PC brought credibility to the personal computer - but Al
was trying to suggest that IBM was "responsible" for the PC revolution, and I can say with 100% certainty, it was happening whether IBM got onboard or not. Their commitment sped it up, but it was going to happen.

Whether MSDOS would have been THE OS is another question. I think Xenix from SCO had a reasonable shot, had SCO had the money to make it happen.

I agree that IBM getting into the business made a lot of peoplle stand up and take notice, then and there. But it was going to happen with or without IBM.
