"why have they not been able to produce A SINGLE IMPORTANT INNOVATION in PC hardware or software? "

This is getting ridiculous.

Who do you think invented hard drives, floppy drives, out of order processing, virtual memory, virtualization and pretty much everything that makes what we think of a computer a computer?

PCs have just been accreting things that have existed on larger machines for a while. About the only thing that IBM hasn't had much influence on has been GUIs. For that, you have to thank Xerox, who really failed to capitalize on PCs or much of anything having to do with computers.

The problem that IBM ran into was the PC market had most of the profit driven from it. Intel did a good job of shifting most of the profits to themselves, but shrinking margins have been the trends for decades. It isn't easy to make a profit in the business any more, even for someone like Dell who has R&D costs of pretty close to zero.
