"a market which IBM could easily have owned lock, stock, and barrel yet, somehow, managed to hand over to MSFT, DELL, and a ton of other companies who were able to capitalize on IBM's failure."

You think like a greedhead (R).

If IBM hadn't given it away, they would never have grown as large as they became. The microcomputer market would have been a babble of single-source competing proprietary brands, OS's, software and hardware.

They'd have been like Apple, who rightly should have OWNED the micro market after introducing the Mac, which was years ahead of every machine except Xerox's very expensive systems, but just couldn't force themselves to open the standard.
