The Soviet Empire was under stress for many other reasons, but clearly trying to compete with the US military buildup and to compete with or counter SDI, increased the stress on the Soviet Empire and helped bring about the end of the empire. Note that both here, and in my previous statement I say "helped...end", not "it ended" or "caused the end of".

That's not making an assertion out of a clear blue sky. That's recognizing reality.
