You basically said it, with the important difference being that your statement was that you thought it was true, not that it was true. That distinction is important, but not enough of a difference for you to reasonably pretend that I made up the idea.

You said "thought they where", with "they where", meaning that unemployed people where counted as employed,

and since we where talking about government unemployment statistics, it doesn't make much sense to try to argue that you thought they where counted as unemployed by some obscure think tank, or relatively unknown economist. The statement obviously referred to "counted by US government statistics". Yes its not a direct quote, you used pronouns instead of the nouns, but that doesn't change the meaning.
