The tough economic climate has yielded more layoffs in the region, this time at businesses in Cheshire and Wallingford.

Protocol Integrated Direct Marketing plans to close its Cheshire call center by the end of March, resulting in the loss of 161 jobs.

And a $2.5 million operating loss at the end of 2008 has prompted Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford to lay off 11 people, including some members of its management team, and suspend the acute care facility’s contributions to employee 401(k) plans.

“These moves are the result of a very difficult decision, yet it is crucial in today’s economy for any organization to be fiscally responsible,” said James Cullen, Gaylord’s president and chief executive officer.
